What is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which cups are used on your skin to create suction which can lead to a variety of benefits. Some of the benefits include decreased pain, decreased inflammation, improved blood flow, improved relaxation and well-being, and aid in deep-tissue massages.

Cupping therapy is a form of manual therapy that can be used on almost anyone who is dealing various forms of pain, particularly musculoskeletal pain, migraines, and tension headaches. The cups are placed on the body at the painful spot and will stay on between 5-10 minutes.

Everything you need to know about cupping

What are the red marks?

Cupping can leave red circles on your skin that will disappear overtime following treatment. Many people think the red marks are bruises, but it is actually a histamine response from the suction due to broken blood vessels just under the skin, which is a natural healing response of the body. The redness also indicates the increased blood flow to that area. The color mirrors the level of stagnation in the area, where the darker the color, the more stagnation present.

Cupping can be applied to almost any painful body part with low back being one of the most common. The cups can be manipulated in different ways to help decrease pain and tightness and will stay on between 5-10 minutes.
