Initiate the healing process

IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) is a form of manual therapy that uses stainless steel instruments in combination with a therapeutic exercise. For patients suffering from back pain as the result of soft tissue damage, the potential advantages of IASTM include the following:

  • A decrease in treatment time.
  • Faster rehabilitation.
  • Reduced need for anti-inflammatory medication.
  • In some cases, this treatment can be helpful in resolving chronic conditions

When we suffer a strained muscle or a pulled ligament or tendon, trauma is caused to the affected soft tissues, and can result in scar tissue and fascia restrictions. At Peak, we offer a variety of therapies to treat these injuries, including the innovative, evidence-based IASTM.

By training our physical therapists in IASTM, Peak offers you one more treatment option to help get you past pain and back to a fulfilling and active lifestyle.

Everything you need to know about IASTM

Reduce Pain & Increase Function

By using IASTM to break down the scar tissue and fascia restrictions caused by soft tissue trauma, therapists are able to reduce patient pain and increase function. This technique offers particular benefits to patients suffering from back muscle strain. Our back is comprised of muscles, fascia, ligaments, and tendons. Injuries to any of these soft tissues—including a simple back muscle strain—can have a significant impact on back pain, functionality, and ease of movement.

Stainless Steel Instruments in Combination with Therapeutic Exercise

The instruments have rounded edges, and are used to scan and detect injured tissues as well as to provide treatment. By using cross-friction massage to rub against the grain of scar tissue, scar tissue is broken down and connective tissue is rearranged. The therapy reintroduces small amounts of trauma to the injured area. Sometimes, this process causes temporary inflammation. Inflammation benefits the injury by increasing the rate and amount of blood flow, initiating the healing process of the affected tissues.
